Hyperbaric oxygen, in plain English

An hour in a clear chamber, breathing oxygen under pressure.

What happens

You lie back in a clear, pressurized chamber and breathe oxygen through a mask for 60 to 90 minutes.

Why pressure matters

Under pressure your body takes in more oxygen than it can at normal air pressure. Here that means 1.5 ATA and up, in medical-grade hard chambers.

What it feels like

Like the first minutes of a flight, then quiet. Most people watch a show or nap, with a technician close by.

5 questions to ask before you go

Hyperbaric oxygen is not all the same, and price alone won’t tell you what you’re getting.

  1. Is it a medical-grade, approved hard chamber, or a hard-shell or soft chamber designed for mild hyperbaric use?

Here: we offer approved, medical-grade, hard-shell chambers only. Clear Sechrist lay-down chambers and a HYOX sit-down chamber, running at 1.5 ATA and up depending on your protocol. Soft or mild chambers are only approved to be used to 1.3 ATA.

  2. Is the chamber FDA-approved and safety tested for clinical use in the United States?

Here: every chamber is FDA-approved, medical grade and US safety tested. Currently only Sechrist or Perry manufactures hyperbaric chambers that are approved and have been safety tested for medical-grade use in the United States. If it’s not one of those, it is most likely not approved for clinical use (1.5 ATA and up), technically illegal to operate in a clinical setting, and would not be covered by professional liability insurance in case of an accident.

  3. Am I being offered a protocol, or a single visit?

Here: for hyperbaric to help, it should be done as a series and compressed together. It’s typically not beneficial to do just one, or to come occasionally. Depending on your goal, we recommend at least 5 sessions, and 10 to 20 is common, scheduled close together. We’ll tell you honestly what we believe you should consider.

  4. Who runs the operations, and how long have they done it?

Here: Mark Westaway has more than 40 years of experience with hyperbaric therapy, in diving and in medical settings. He’s also taught hyperbaric operations for over 15 years. Our technicians are trained to operate safely and stay right near you.

  5. What is the session actually like?

Here: clear chambers allow you to see out the whole time, and you have your own screen. Most people watch a show or nap. If you are nervous in small spaces, tell us ahead of time, and we’ll make sure you feel comfortable every step of the way.

The honest version

Why we talk about protocols, not single sessions

One session rarely changes much. Most people start with a minimum of 5, and real shifts usually take 10 or more, close together.

That’s why we would rather plan a series with you than sell you a visit. And it’s why we don’t do memberships.

Common questions

Far less than a hospital bills. Hospital-based hyperbaric is often billed at $850 to $2,500 a session. That is the hospital price, not ours. Ours is a fraction of it.

Your exact price depends on your protocol, so we go through real numbers at your free consultation.

We recommend a minimum of 5. Most people need 10 or more before they notice real shifts, and some protocols run longer. We’ll give you an honest number when we understand your goals.

Come and see the chambers first. The lay-down chambers are clear, so it doesn’t feel enclosed, and a technician can sit beside you where you can see them.

For the first five minutes or so it feels like landing in an airplane. You equalize by yawning or swallowing. If anything is uncomfortable, tell the technician and we slow down.

No. Insurance does not cover the services at O2 Health Lab, which is one reason we keep our pricing far below hospital rates.

Anything comfortable. You breathe oxygen through a mask, so no special clothing is needed. We suggest leaving jewelry and heavy makeup at home.

Either 60 or 90 minutes, depending on your protocol.
